KMS Open Cafe

If your student(s) are looking for something to do after school, they can now join our Open Cafe.  A safe, supervised, phone-free environment where they can hang out with friends and play board/card games and more.  Open on Wednesdays and Thursdays 2:30-4:45.  Students are expected to stay the entire time, if for some reason they need to be picked up early they will need to be signed out by a parent/guardian.  At 4:45 when Open Cafe ends, students will be dismissed and they can walk to parent pick-up, Teen Center, etc.

***Exception - If a student has KMS Basketball Practice for Black Team at 4pm, they are allowed to walk to the gym without being signed out.

School Winter Dance

We will be having a Winter Dance on Friday, January 24, 2025 from 6PM-8PM in the KMS Gym. The cost is $5.  Please read the following expectations:

  • Please be aware there is no supervision before the dance so students should not be on campus before 6:00.
  • Any students absent or dismissed early on the day of dance without returning to school are not eligible to attend unless prior arrangements have been made with the office.
  • Students who have been suspended (externally or internally) the month prior to the dance are not eligible to attend.
  • Students may not bring outside drinks or full drink containers/bottles to the dance. All items students bring with them will be held in a separate room for the duration of the dance.
  • Students arriving after 6:15 pm will need to be brought to the door by a parent or guardian.
  • Students are not able to leave the dance early unless a parent or guardian is present at the door for the pickup.
  • Pick-up for the dance is at 8:00 pm sharp. Pick-up will go more smoothly if you arrange ahead of time to meet your child over in the parking lot between the SAU and Mountainside as traffic can back up at the main entrance.

Week of December 30, 2024

Happy New Year and Welcome Back

We hope everyone had a nice break and is ready to get back on schedule.  We will be back at school on Thursday, January 2, 2025.

Attendance Concerns

We are sending a friendly reminder to emphasize the critical role of daily attendance and punctuality in your child's success here at KMS. As absences and tardies add up, letters will be sent home. Please talk with your child about their attendance and let them know that each day at school builds on previous learning, and being present and on time ensures they don’t miss essential lessons, interactions, and activities that contribute to their academic and social growth.

Arriving on time not only helps your child start the day prepared but also fosters a sense of responsibility and routine that is invaluable for their future. Missing even a few days can lead to gaps in understanding and increased stress as students try to catch up.

Students may enter the building at 7:25 and must be in their homeroom by 7:35. We encourage parents to drop off students between 7:15 and 7:25 as it is difficult to make it into the building on time if they arrive later than that. Students also have the opportunity to have breakfast in the cafeteria and socialize with friends at 7:25. We hope to make significant improvements to student attendance over the next quarter!

Pickup and Drop-Off Reminders

Pick up and drop off during scheduled times should always occur over in the pickup/dropoff area by the football field. Please schedule your drop off time so your child can enter the building by 7:35 am. Only students approved by the Nurse or Principal should be dropped off by the cafeteria.

Thank you for your continued partnership!

Happenings At KMS This Week

OTZI the Iceman, A Recreation of the Mummy

This week at KMS the 6th grade classes will be experiencing a unique reconstruction and discovery of Otzi, also known as the Iceman.  The original Iceman is a mummified human body that was discovered in the Otztal Alps on the border of Italy and Austria in 1991.  Ice and snow covered the Iceman’s body for approximately 5,300 years making him the oldest preserved human.

As part of their current social studies unit on archeology and the Stone Age, uncovering and discovering a recreation of Otzi is a perfect way to engage and immerse our students in a hands-on learning experience.  Classes will “visit” the recreated mummified body (made from plaster of paris and plastic bones) and some of the many artifacts found with his body.  These artifacts will be documented, analyzed, and used as evidence in upcoming activities.  Students will apply their knowledge of archeology and the stages and aspects of the Stone Age to draw conclusions about who this man was, what he was doing in the Alps, what period he lived in, and how he died.  For more information on the real Otzi The Iceman, please click on and read the article here!
