Happenings At KMS This Week

OTZI the Iceman, A Recreation of the Mummy

This week at KMS the 6th grade classes will be experiencing a unique reconstruction and discovery of Otzi, also known as the Iceman.  The original Iceman is a mummified human body that was discovered in the Otztal Alps on the border of Italy and Austria in 1991.  Ice and snow covered the Iceman’s body for approximately 5,300 years making him the oldest preserved human.

As part of their current social studies unit on archeology and the Stone Age, uncovering and discovering a recreation of Otzi is a perfect way to engage and immerse our students in a hands-on learning experience.  Classes will “visit” the recreated mummified body (made from plaster of paris and plastic bones) and some of the many artifacts found with his body.  These artifacts will be documented, analyzed, and used as evidence in upcoming activities.  Students will apply their knowledge of archeology and the stages and aspects of the Stone Age to draw conclusions about who this man was, what he was doing in the Alps, what period he lived in, and how he died.  For more information on the real Otzi The Iceman, please click on and read the article here!
